Printmaking in Indonesia: Rupa Bali Podcast at Ubud Open Studios 2025

We were lucky to have the Rupa Bali team record one of our Art Talks sessions at the 2025 Ubud Open Studios. The Print Matters sessions was presented by Ruang Arta Derau: “What do zines, risograph, and artist collectives have in common? They’re reshaping how Indonesia tells stories locally and globally. It’s not just print—it’s punk, it’s poetry, it’s politics—it’s tactile publishing in the digital era. The discussion featured printmaker Agugn, designer Janur Rianto and artist Gilang Propagila. Moderated by Wicitra Pradnyaratih”

In their words, Rupa Bali is “Rupa Bali Podcast is a platform for discussions about the world of arts and culture in Bali that... well, can be lighthearted, can be serious... what is certain is that here we want to share knowledge with anyone in a more fun way!”

The session is in Indonesian and English- listen in below.

Printmaking, along with zines and risograph printing, has roots in subcultures like punk, where it served as a DIY tool for self-expression, communication, and activism. Artists use printmaking and zines to document social movements, empower communities, and share alternative perspectives, especially in Bali and other regions. Techniques like risograph printing offer economical ways to produce art and publications in small to medium quantities, making printmaking sustainable for independent artists and publishers.. The unique qualities of risograph prints (such as slight variations and imperfections) add artistic value and appeal.

Printmaking helps reshape how Indonesia tells its stories both locally and globally, blending punk, poetry, politics, and tactile publishing in the digital era. It fosters a vibrant art scene that connects Indonesian artists with international audiences through art fairs, exhibitions, and collaborations
